We are delighted to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our PhD student, Ané Kritzinger, in the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. Ané is a cotutelle student between the University of St Andrews and Adelaide University in Australia.

Ané claimed both the top prize and the People’s Choice Award at the University of Adelaide’s 2025 3MT final, impressing a sold-out lecture theatre with her presentation “Shining Light Behind the Bottle: from Fraud to Fatality”. In just three minutes, she explained how her spectroscopy research can detect fake wines and dangerous chemicals like methanol in spirits, all without opening the bottle.

Her university win qualified her for the Asia-Pacific competition, where representatives from universities across Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore competed as semi-finalists. Two judging panels then selected just eight finalists to progress to the 2025 Virtual Asia-Pacific 3MT Final – and Ané was among them!
